MoMoDC Event December 10, 2007

WiMAX, the IEEE 802.16 standard often referred to as "WiFi on steroids", has the capability to serve subscribers over a greater range and at a higher rate than WiFi currently does at local cafes and airports. Marius Popa, Sr. Software Engineer at OPNET, and Rich Leung, Sr. Communication Engineer at MITRE, will provide a general overview of this technology and go into some details on what makes WiMAx unique, how WiMAX could impact the wireless ecosystem and the current happenings in the WiMAX industry.

About Marius Popa:
Marius graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Physics, then went on to receive his ME in Electrical Engineering from University of Maryland. Currently, he serves as a lead modeling engineer with OPNET Technologies and for the past six years, he has worked on developing simulation models that are used by major industry players for deployment and R&D studies.

About Rich Leung:
Graduated from Virginia Tech with both a bachelor and a master in electrical engineering, Rich Leung began his career working for various of engineering contracting companies in the DC metro area before settling at MITRE as a Sr. Communication Engineer. Currently, he is working in the CAASD group performing variety of studies, analysis, and R&D effort for the FAA and other related aeronautical mobile communication projects.

About Beverly Murdock:
Beverly Murdock was one of the first graduate students at the Center for Wireless Telecommunications at Virginia Tech, where she received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and Masters in Business Administration. She has more than fifteen years of experience in the wireless and satellite industry. Beverly began her career with a small satellite command and control company and then moved onto Iridium, where she took on new challenges such as global follow-me paging and satellite-cellular roaming products, as well as the then-emerging use of the Internet for international commerce, personalized marketing, and partner information exchange. Ms. Murdock has also held product development and management responsibilities at a number of start-up software companies, building mobile applications, carrier infrastructure products and mobile content. Those products are in use today at Fortune 1000 companies and major US wireless carriers. Since joining Nextel in 2004, she has applied her unique entrepreneurial experiences to investigating the business potential of emerging technologies including cable telephony, seamless voice and data mobility, software-defined radios, and innovative location monitoring applications. For the last two years, she has been focused on the development of Sprint’s next generation mobile broadband business and currently serves as the Director of Staff Operations for Barry West, Sprint CTO and Xohm President.
